‘Occult’ Site Exhibition 2020
Site Collective launched an exhibition in the autumn of 2020 at Studio 20 during the tail end of the pandemic. The exhibition’s theme was ‘Occult’. While based in Norfolk during this time, I explored the county’s rich occult history and its deep-rooted witchcraft traditions. For the exhibition, I created a series of ‘digital tapestries’ that also doubled as wearable headscarves or face masks. My fabrics were made from 100% silk and were machine washable, allowing for easy disinfection in the spirit of the pandemic, as everyone was cautious about spreading COVID-19. My final fabrics were also inspired by my Romany heritage, where headscarves are called “diklhlo.” Therefore, my collection of six scarves served as an ode to these “dikhlos.” Additionally, my work included dialogue in the form of poetry and prose, interweaving the strange days of the pandemic with the theme of the occult. My initial research evolved into continuous line drawings, which then transformed into mixed media fabric samples and ultimately culminated in my digital tapestries that were also wearable. A big thank you to the wonderful individuals who helped the pieces sell out on the exhibition's opening night!
