‘U-haul Dyke Rescue’ was founded by Lucy Nunberg. ‘U-haul Dyke Rescue’ emergerd from Lucy’s ‘SuperFUTURES’ thesis project, MA Interior Design at RCA in 2023. Inspired by queer rights being in jeopardy and anti LGBTQ+ propaganda on the uprise in the UK and beyond. In this regressive climate, queers need to stick together. Here enters the ‘U-haul Dyke Rescue’!!
The ‘U-haul Dyke Rescue - Mobile Bar’ is a touring queer space that pops up wherever it’s needed - festivals, venues and parking lots - to bring dyke camp culture to the masses. The mobile bar has since debuted at Mighty Hoopla festival in June 2024 and has since appeared at Field Maneuvers, The Yard Theatre, the Victoria & Albert Museum, RuPaul’s DragCon 2025 and more. The venue has become famous for its arm wrestling tournaments, impromptu karaoke sessions and megaphone commentary by Uhaul Dyke Rescue hosts. For updates about the project, see @uhaul.dyke.rescue
I had the pleasure of being invited onto the ‘U-haul Dyke Rescue’ team for the new and secret venue called ‘Big Sue’s Garage’ in Brockwell Park for 2025. My responsibilities during this project included overseeing the set decoration and install of ‘Big Sue’s Garage’. The theme of the new venue is heavily themed by the ‘U-haul Dyke Rescue’ concept of dyke-centered vintage mechanic’s garage’s. Other inspiration also includes being a silly, fantasty themed take on these predomeinetly male dominated spaces. It’s modern and inclusive spin on a stereotypical mechanic garage, challenging past stereotypes yet encouraging a new queer space to emerge.
‘Big Sue’s Garage’ final set design included: ……..> add description ligts, furniture, wall-hangings etc.
